  • I am finally convinced that the cholesterol found in shrimp isn’t going to raise my blood cholesterol and may actually decrease my risk of heart disease.  Are there any other nutrients found in shrimp that can make me healthier?

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I heard that farm-raised salmon has less omega-3 fats than wild salmon. Is this true?

  • Dear Janice & Liz, It seems as if the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids keep on surfacing. My husband says he read somewhere that omega-3s may actually help with spinal cord injury recovery. Is this true? Best--Michael S.Warren, MI

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I have been reading that fish has a lot of Omega 3 fatty acids. Why
do we need Omega 3 in our diet and is it better to eat fresh fish than
just take an Omega 3 supplement?

    Sincerely,
    Fishing for Omega 3

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

Hi - I am a dietitian and a patient recently asked my why shellfish
are higher in iron than other fish.  Do you have any answers for me?
    Thank you for your help.

    Have a great day!

    Sue.

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

My daughter in law is frustrated with the doctor's recommendations
that she not eat seafood while she is pregnant. What can, and should
she eat? She loves all seafood including sushi.

    Thanks for your help,
    Teddy B.

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I would like to know which types of fish are best to serve someone
who has heart problems.  I also would like to know if there is a
difference between fresh and saltwater fish as far as heart smart.  The
person I cook for was just diagnosed with heart blockage and I need to
cook more healthy for them.   What about seafood such as shrimp and
crab?  I usually grill the fish and shrimp on my gas grill.

    Thanks for the information.
    Cynthia

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

This Valentine’s Day my husband and I are giving each other healthy
hearts! We’re walking more and trying to eat right. How many times a
week should we have seafood and what variety should we eat?

    Sincerely,
    Jane

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I recently heard a news report that fish is good for the brain.  Is
this true, and if so, how much do I have to eat to reap the benefits?

    Thanks,
    Jim

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I have heard that fresh seafood is better than frozen or canned, but
I don’t always have access to fresh fish.  Can I use canned and frozen
    as a backup?

    Regards,
    Cari

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I live in the mountains of Virginia, but last winter I spent a long
time down in Key West, FL and Of course I ate a lot of seafood and many
plates of oysters! (I do eat fish 2x a week or more at home.) But when
I came returned from FL last March I noticed that my fingernails were
very strong and hard. Can you tell me what part of my seafood diet
contributed to this? It was a pleasant surprise - and the first time I
ever noticed such a significant change from diet.

    Sincerely,
    Karen Shaffer-Bristol,VA

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I want to increase the amount of fish in my diet. I don't really
like fish but I love shellfish. I'm not crazy about the taste of fish
but am more worried about swallowing a bone. I'm looking for a mild
flavored fish without needle-like bones. Are there any?

    Thanks for your help,
    Bonnie S.

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

My friend told me that it is dangerous to grill food over high heat
because cancer-causing compounds can form. Should I forgo grilling this
    summer?

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I was wondering if it is true that a person should not drink milk or
have ice cream when eating and after eating lobster.  My family has
held with this tradition for years and I am just wondering if there is
any truth to this or if it is an old wives tales?  I would appreciate
it if you could let me know what is truth and what is a myth.

    Very much appreciated,
     Melanie, Maine

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

My husband went on a successful Bodega Bay giant calamari fishing
trip yesterday. Is calamari healthy? I heard it was high in cholesterol?

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

A friend told me that a new study showed eating fish can reduce the
risk of kidney cancer.  Is this true?  I have a family history of this
type of cancer so am anxiously awaiting your reply.

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I use to live in NJ and had access to fresh seafood and loved it.
15 years ago I moved to Indianapolis.  Fresh was hard to find. I have
now moved about 1 1/2 hours out of Indianapolis in the country. There
is no fresh seafood to be found. I rely on grocery store bought frozen
    fish.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I’ve heard there is a lot of potassium in seafood. Do you have a
chart or list of which has more? I’d like to get it naturally, if
    possible.

    Thank you,
    Laurie B.

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I am a 38 year old Caucasian woman. I recently went to my
cardiologist and he told me to incorporate more fish into my diet. He
didn’t say what kind of fish to eat? Could you please tell me a healthy
fish to eat in the New England area? I am just now learning to like
fish as I have been a meat and potato girl for many years.

PS--I am allergic to shellfish, crab, lobster and shrimp.

    Thank you very much,
    Sharon C., Natick, MA

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

Hello! I am a MD from Romania and I have a patient, male, 42 years
with metabolic syndrome. He asked me if he may eat seafood (not fish,
because I already told him that he can eat fish). My question is how
much uric acid is in the seafood and which species are best / less
dangerous for him? I hope he may eat seafood, because he loves it.

    Thank you very much,
    Mela

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I was recently at the supermarket and noticed packages of grilled
fish fillets. They seemed to be high in cholesterol – about 40
milligrams. Can you explain which types of seafood are lowest in
cholesterol and what I should be looking for?

    Thanks,
    Judith S.

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

Hello! I am a seafood processing technologist from Iran. Can you
send me some information about the safety and health of smoked fish?

    Thanks for your help
    Hamid M. (B.F.Sc)

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I have high potassium and would like to know if scallops have potassium. I will be seeing my physician about my problem next week. What about other seafood?

    Thank you
    Sandy M.
  • Dear Janice & Liz,

Can I eat fish daily? I want to begin eating healthier so I have been experimenting with different types of fish over the past few weeks. I have also eaten a lot of fruits and vegetables. I had a turkey burger once. I feel a lot better physically. Is it healthy to continue eating fish like this or do I need to eat other meats, as well?

    Meochia B.

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

Several years ago, I got food poisoning from eating some bad fish.
Since then, I have been depriving myself of having any fish. Are there
fish varieties that are less likely to go bad? I would love to know
which fish are the safest bet.

    Thanks so much,
    Eduardo

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I am allergic to crab, lobster and shrimp. When I eat any of these
items my throat and tongue swell up. No one has ever told me what is in
these three items that is causing the reactions. Several people have
guessed that it is Iodine, but I eat iodized salt so I don't think that
would be it. Do you know what the common allergen is in crustaceans?

    Thank you,
    Dianne M.

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I just learned my cholesterol is really elevated. Which seafood
should I avoid & which can I have? I enjoy most all seafood.

    Thanks,
    Confused Mom

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

If a person is allergic to iodine, shellfish, and shrimp, is herring
fish off limits? Is it high in mercury? I also eat (but not regularly)
tuna, sardine, and some types white fish.

    Thanks,
    Chuck D.

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I’ve been asked to make an oyster stuffing for Thanksgiving dinner
but have never done this.  Won’t the stuffing take on the taste of the
oysters and be fishy?  I don’t want to compete with all the other
    flavors in the meal!

  • Dear Janice & Liz,

I've heard that Australian seafood has lower mercury levels than
seafood from the U.S.  Is this true?  Can you shed some light on this
    issue?

    Sincerely,
    Mark L. from Greenbay, WI

We already know that shrimp is low in fat and calories. But if you are concerned about cholesterol, there is good news. You do not have to give up shrimp! Research shows and dietitians concur that the high percentage of "good fats" in shrimp reduces the impact of cholesterol. So enjoy shrimp as part of a balanced - and delicious - diet.
