Question:

Dear Janice & Liz,

I have high potassium and would like to know if scallops have potassium. I will be seeing my physician about my problem next week. What about other seafood?

Thank you
Sandy M.
Answer:

Hi Sandy: Yes, scallops do indeed contain potassium. As you may
know, potassium is an essential mineral that helps to regulate blood
pressure and aids in muscle contraction and nerve transmission. Check
out the chart below for the potassium found in a 4-ounce serving of a
variety of seafood. For comparison sake, one medium banana has 422
milligrams and a medium baked potato has 925 milligrams.

Seafood (4 ounces cooked) Milligrams of Potassium

Salmon 470
Haddock 462
Macker 455
Scallops 444
Clams 422
Sole 390
Lobster 388
Catfish 364
Crab 350
Cod 277
Tuna, canned 270
Shrimp 206

Ask a dietition

  • I am finally convinced that the cholesterol found in shrimp isn’t going to raise my blood cholesterol and may actually decrease my risk of heart disease.  Are there any other nutrients found in shrimp that can make me healthier?

We already know that shrimp is low in fat and calories. But if you are concerned about cholesterol, there is good news. You do not have to give up shrimp! Research shows and dietitians concur that the high percentage of "good fats" in shrimp reduces the impact of cholesterol. So enjoy shrimp as part of a balanced - and delicious - diet.
