Dear Janice & Liz,
If a person is allergic to iodine, shellfish, and shrimp, is herring
fish off limits? Is it high in mercury? I also eat (but not regularly)
tuna, sardine, and some types white fish.
Thanks,
Chuck D.
Herrings are small fish that are not in the shellfish family.
Therefore, they should be okay to eat even if you have a shellfish
allergy. Of course, you should check with your allergist or doctor to
confirm that you can safely consume them. Herrings are a great source
of heart-healthy omega-3 fats as well as vitamin D, a nutrient
important in bone health. They are very low in mercury and other
contaminants such as PCBs and dioxins. Herring are often consumed
pickled or smoked and are a convenient way to get the health benefits
of seafood with little effort. Herring lovers are passionate about
these tasty little fish, and if more people gave herring a chance,
we’re sure their ranks would grow exponentially!
I am finally convinced that the cholesterol found in shrimp isn’t going to raise my blood cholesterol and may actually decrease my risk of heart disease. Are there any other nutrients found in shrimp that can make me healthier?
Happy Holidays!
Ralph C.
